2020 MANDELA MARATHON CANCELLED

Following extensive consultations among stakeholders, the 2020 Mandela Day Marathon which had been scheduled for 23 August at Capture Site in Howick, has been cancelled.

The stakeholders include the KwaZulu-Natal Athletics, KwaZulu-Natal Government, uMgungundlovu District Municipality, CoGTA (Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs), DSR (Depart of Sports and Recreation) and EDTEA (Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs) as well as corporate sponsors, came to the conclusion that the current health environment in the country does not allow for the race to be held.

This decision was primarily influenced by the spread COVID-19 pandemic which is managed through a national lockdown declared under the National State of Disaster by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

At this point, all concerned parties and stakeholders are continuing to discuss the possibility of an alternative to the race. An update to this effect will be made in due course.

“The corona virus pandemic has had a tremendous negative impact on the well-being of all our communities, of which our athletes are part of. Our country is beginning to experience a peak in transmissions as well as a spike in deaths due to the virus,” says the ASA President, Aleck Skhosana.

“Athletics South Africa, KZN Athletics and partners have a responsibility to ensure that the safety of our athletes and everybody else comes first. We continue to align ourselves with government regulations on the ongoing lockdown which disallows people to congregate in groups.

“For purposes of fitness, athletes must continue to observe and respect the regulations outlined by the government under current Level 3. We further urge all athletes in the country to ensure that saving their lives, of their coaches, families and communities, are on top of their priorities. Let’s not forget to wash our hands, put our masks, to keep a distance of 2 metres, to stay indoors and to go out only when necessary.”
